Why analog?
Given the fact that I have been without Instagram now for almost an entire month I feel very indifferent about digital versus analog and photography in generell. But first things first.
I’m an old fart in terms of social media. Although I definitely do not consider myself a boomer, I am of course the guy who sounds pretty awkward if he uses the word cringe or lit in a normal conversation with my kids or a same aged person (okay, i officially defined myself a boomer).
When it comes to that analog photography bubble things become a bit more diverse. I am at an age where I actually had to shoot film because that was the only possibility of documenting life. And listen up kids: WE FUCKING HATED IT! All this slow down momentum of composing an image, the process of developing, everything you motherfuckers are talking about on your YouTube channels was a pain in the ass back in the days. We just wanted the photos back where you landed your first kick flip or you buddy was laying in his vomit on his prom night. Okay I’m exaggerating a bit. I never landed a kick flip. And it was me vomiting and crying on prom night cause a random girl left me the week before. If you read this Elsa: Fuck you, you Slut!
Decades later I started an Instagram page, showing off my digital and to analog aesthetics edited photos, than I bought a Fujifilm X100V because their Film Simulations reminded me of a different time when photos looked more like a realistic, more imperfect life. At that very same time I slowly drifted into this analog photography bubble on the gram and damn it, these are a bunch of lovely people - okay, only the few one’s without hybris. So I dragged out the old cameras of my dad and inserted the first film after at least 15 years, got it developed and never got back to posting a digital photograph on IG. All the things that tripped me off back in the days, they seem to be now more like a solid rock in a restless ocean of a society full of weirdos. It’s giving me peace. It’s giving us peace. That is the thing we all have in common.
